The national Do Not Call list, started in 2003, allows consumers to opt out of receiving telemarketing sales calls for five years. The first five year period is up this year. However,
There are current proposals in Congress (House and Senate) to make the Do Not Call list permanent thus preventing people from having to renew their registration. The Senate bill is co-sponsored by Charles Schumer, Democrat of New York, and the House bill is sponsored by Mike Doyle, Democrat of Pennsylvania.
In the meantime, the Federal Trade Commission advises that concerned consumers may register again for the Do Not Call list, to ensure they remain on the list. Register either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling the commission's toll-free hot line at (888) 382 - 1222 .
The Do Not Call list is a benefit to both consumers and telemarketing companies. Telemarketing companies prefer to contact consumers who are potentially interested in or have a need for their products and services. The Do Not Call list helps make their work more efficient.
